CHAMPS TO OPEN SEASON WITH AWESOME NEW JERSEYS

CHAMPS  TO OPEN SEASON WITH AWESOME NEW JERSEYS

With opening night just FOUR(!!!!!) days away, the Miami Heat are gearing up to begin their quest for a third straight title.  Before the season can actually get started the Heat will receive their rings, which they will be doing in style.
Images are beginning to surface revealing a new Adidas jersey they will wear on opening night.  Most obviously, the jersey features gold lettering of the team name and player number.  It also seems as if there is a diagonally patterned recurring watermark throughout the jersey that reads “2013 NBA CHAMPIONS.”  The jersey also features a patch of the Larry O’Brien trophy on the left shoulder.

We also have images of the new warm up jacket that the Heat will be wearing.  Red and black cuffs accent an all-white jacket with a red stripe down the arms.  The front of the jacket features the same watermarked patterns that can be found on the jersey.  There are two patches, on the left breast lays the Heat logo, and on the right breast the Larry O’Brien trophy  On the back of the jacket sits another Larry O’Brien trophy and the years the Heat have been named champions (2006, 2012, 2013).

They say “to the victor go the spoils” and in this case the victor also gets a gang of Trinidad James inspired “All Gold Everything” apparel.  As one might imagine all of this gear is available on the NBA website store so Heat fans, as well as awesome apparel fans make sure you check it out!

A Video Tribute to Mike Miller

Mike Miller was recently waived by the Miami Heat, who used their Amnesty provisions to clear his salary from their cap.  Miller has had some legendary moments with the Heat, including some of the mightiest playoff heroics we have ever seen.  He has been famously known to "let it fly" and has done so with mastery and grace.  Lets take a look back at some of our favorite "Miller time" moments from his tenure with the Miami Heat!

Who will forget this moment from the 2013 Finals against the Spurs when Miller hit a 3 pointer with only 1 shoe on.  This shot was vital in the Heat's attempts to comeback from a double digit deficit during an elimination game 6.
During the closing minutes of a blow-out game 2 in Miami, Miller's behind the head pass to a dunking LeBron surely ignited the crowd.
Miller had many great friends on the team, but when the Heat added colorful Chris "Birdman" Andersen in January, the pair of "crazy ass white boys" took the south Florida scene by storm.
On a night where LeBron would play Millers role, making 7 3's, Miller would play the role of LeBron, throwing down a sweet lob from Dwyane Wade.
Miller made history when he added his name to the record books as a 10,000 point scorer.  He reached that threshold by draining back to back 3's against OKC on Christmas day.
Most of all, Miller was extremely helpful in bringing Miami its second title in 2012.  Draining 7 threes and two free throws en route to 23 points, Miller was instrumental to the Heat's game 5 Blowout victory that sent the Thunder packing.

We will always remember Miller as a guy who made big shots when they mattered most.  He will be greatly missed in Miami for his shot making, leadership, awesome playoff moments, and most of all, LETTING IT FLY!

Ranking the 2013 Offseason Moves

Power Ranking the 2013 Offseason Moves

The once red headed step child that once was Los Angeles’s “other team” has stepped into the spotlight, and though they may not have landed the biggest name this summer, they have added the appropriate talent in 3pt marksman J.J Reddick and a locker room funnyman and consummate unselfish professional in Jared Dudley.  Resigning all-star point guard Chris Paul was first on their priority list, and after retaining him quickly all the Clippers need be concerned about is true big man talent, though if DeAndre Jordan can become more of an offensive threat as well as increase his free throw percentage the Clippers will be scary good.

The Dwight Howard war has been won by the team in red!  Houston will become home the biggest free agent name from the 2013 class and this makes them substantially better.  Omer Asik was excellent during the 2012-13 season, but the size, power, strength and overall ability that Dwight Howard brings to the table best all of Asik’s qualities.  The only reason the Rockets are not number 1 on this list is because it is yet to be seen how they will potentially move Jeremy Lin and Asik, who reportedly wants no part in the Rockets organization as a backup.

The Warriors recently signed forward/guard Andre Iguodala to a 4 year deal, and though he could have earned more money by staying in Denver it is clear that at least some of his priorities point toward winning.  This is a massive upgrade for the Warriors who are already slated to have the highest scoring back court in the league in 2013-14 with their snipers Steph Curry and Klay Thompson.  Iguodala is one of the best defenders in the league with the speed and ability to defend smaller guards, with these attributes he will be a perfect fit for what the Warriors are trying to do.

Yes, the Cavs made this list at #4! They were obviously a below average team last season but their young star, Kyrie Irving, made the all-star team as a second year player.  They struck gold by winning the rights to the first pick in the NBA draft and surprised many by picking Anthony Bennett who had gotten little exposure while in college.  The Cavs bolstered their roster by adding young forward Earl Clark and seasoned sixth-man Jarrett Jack.  Cleveland took a risk in picking up former all-star and championship winning center Andrew Bynum, who is coming off a season riddled by injury in which he didn’t play a single game.  Cleveland has improved their roster profoundly, and if all works out as planned, with Anthony Bennett budding as a possible star in this league and Andrew Bynum receiving the proper treatment and becoming a contributing player again, the Cavs could be in a position to make the playoffs.

The Nets’ attempt to blow everybody out of the water is yet to be seen, but they are adding huge NBA names, if not the talent that those names are accustomed to putting up.  Though their projected starting lineup of Williams, Johnson, Pierce, Garnett and Lopez have amassed 35 all-star appearances combined, it seems like, besides for Lopes and maybe Williams, their best years are behind them.  The hype the Nets will receive by putting this team together will only be rivaled by the coverage they got when facing Shaq and Kobe in the finals, back when now head coach Jason Kidd was the star point guard.

After selecting projected #1 overall pick Nerlens Noel sixth in the draft they quickly flipped him for all-star point guard Jrue Holiday.  Holiday is definitely an upgrade for the Pelicans, who spent their last year as the Hornets with Grevis Vasquez running the point.  With Anthony Davis’s   projected growth, it is intelligent to pair him with Holiday to form a potentially lethal pick and roll combination.  Tyreke Evans was also an impressive pickup for the Pels.  The former #4 pick in the draft has a lot to offer this young roster, and if can increase his overall game throughout his time in New Orleans he can contribute a lot.

The Pacers mostly improved from within.  The resigning of David West was an imperative move that the Pacers were easily able to pull off, and with the addition of Danny Granger from injury will prove to substantially improve their team in the upcoming season.  Even if they are able to move Granger for complimentary pieces, they are probably better off seeing as the Pacers learned how to win without Granger.  The addition of Chris Copeland from the Knicks add perimeter shooting and additional defense.

With Dirk on a downturn heading into his retirement the Mavs have resorted to adding smaller talent in Jose Calderon and Monta Ellis.  Calderon, though underexposed by playing in Toronto then Detroit after a lengthy career in Spain, is a great point guard in this league.  Though not quite elite he has a knack for triple doubles and is an excellent distributor of the ball.  This is excellent because their other “big” free agent acquisition in Monta Ellis likes to shoot.. A lot.  With Dirk likely available for most of the season if he avoids injury, the Mavs should be in a better position than they were in last season, and though Monta might have it all, he might not have enough to propel this team to the playoffs.

The Suns have made very few moves but of the moves they have made, the move to acquire Eric Bledsoe from the clippers says a lot about where this franchise is going in the future.  After Shaq, then Matrix, the Amar’e, then Nash left town all that remained was a bust in Beasley and an old Jermaine O’Neal.  Eric Bledsoe brings youth, athleticism speed and skill to the Sums starting lineup, a position that was difficult to crack in La playing behind Chris Paul.  Bledsoe, combined with Alex Len out of Maryland show that this team is moving in the right direction and though they won’t be any good this year, things don’t look so bad for the future.

The Heat have made no outside moves this offseason, and the only rumblings are that they might pursue Greg Oden, who may end up being a wasted roster spot.  The heat have made some internal moves though, and those moves will prove to be, and have proven to have been extremely important.  The Heat have chosen to retain their team option to keep Mario Chalmers on the Squad for at least another year.  The Heat have also resigned Chris “Birdman” Andersen to a one year deal with an option for the second year.  Ray Allen Opted into his contract and we all know how important he was to the Heats repeat title run.

Bizzaro Rankings

Although the Bucks signed OJ Mayo and traded for Luke Ridnour, the amount of “talent” that they lost will prove to be major.  Losing J.J Reddick to the clippers and Monta to the Mavs have left them with a lame starting lineup.  This might be a good year to be bad, as the 2014 draft class proves to be a great one, and everybody knows the city of Milwaukee and their fans are dying to be relevant again.

Over the course of April until now the Lakers have lost both Dwight and Kobe, though Kobe is only gone temporarily.  To make up for their losses the Lakers have picked up Swaggy Nick Young, a far traveled Jordan Farmar, and question mark Wesley Johnson.  Jim Buss knows that the Lakers need to be bad this season, but since everyone in the organization is afraid of Kobe they will make moves to make it seem like they are attempting to win.  They aren’t.  At all.

It seems every year the thunder lose a vital piece that makes people question the organization.  First it was the harden trade that netted them Kevin Martin, and now he’s left town and all they are left with is Orlando summer league Finals MVP Jeremy Lamb, who has yet to seriously prove himself on an NBA stage.  It will be interesting to see if the Thunder will acquire anyone else to help even out the scoring load, and if they are going to be any serious force in the west Kevin Durant might have to take it into his own hands.

UNPOPULAR OPINION ALERT! Brittney Griner would be a great fit on the Miami Heat.

The Miami Heat are just coming off a second straight title run, and with a team that will likely remain unchanged, there needs to be something that will spice up the locker room.  Not something that will potentially break team chemistry such as attempting to increase drastically through trades, but a true challenge: rewrite the script on NBA teams, shake up the league and take some heat off the “big 3” as they arrive at their contract opt-out.  The answer? Brittney Griner! The polarizing, record breaking, slam dunking, 6’8’’ #1 pick in the WNBA draft, and there are more than those basic reasons to add her to the squad.

The ability to train with the best

We can all agree that LeBron James is the best basketball player in the world, and with the WNBA offseason nestled neatly in the confines of the NBA regular season, being a part of the big league squad will help Griner immensely when it’s time to head back to Phoenix.  Griner has already shown many signs of her willingness to be dominant, including throwing down two dunks in her first pro game, tying a WNBA record for dunks in a career, and setting the record for dunks in a game.  LeBron, at the absolute peak of his physical dominance would be able to help Griner grow in this category.

It's an unprecedented move

Nothing like this has ever been achieved in the NBA let alone any pro sports.  The Miami Heat, for the past three years, have been heavily scrutinized and for good reason.  They are the most polarizing team in the NBA with the best player in the world.  This team is going to be the talk of the twitter world no matter what they do, why not really shake things up and add a new story line? The Miami Heat, and specifically the “Big 3” of James, Wade and Bosh will receive the most publicity because of their upcoming chance to opt-out of their current contracts.  One year in advance and LeBron is apparently already packing his bags for Los Angeles, Cleveland, and he’s staying in Miami.  At least with Griner around there will be other news for ESPN to go on about besides LeBron’s impending free agency.

Breaking sexual barriers

With Jason Collins stepping up to the plate and coming out publicly as gay there is at least one semi current NBA player that is homosexual, though Collins is currently not signed for the 2013-14 season.  Griner not only brings the female aspect into the NBA, but she is also openly lesbian, and no-she isn’t afraid to say it.  Griner has openly embraced and has publicly expressed her homosexuality and with the NBA’s initiative to embrace and accept people of all kinds, Griner would be an excellent ambassador for this message.  She and dreadlock mate Kenneth Faried, who is a member of the Athlete Ally program that supports rights for the LGBT community, would be willing representatives for the league.

She’s a great athlete..not that she’ll actually play

Yes, Griner has the potential to be a garbage-time hero on a team that is prone to blow-outs, and yes the Heat have an extra roster spot as of now, but that’s not the only reason she should make the roster.  Griners elevated skills are enough to be a capable practice and training camp challenge, especially if she hits the weight room.  The post offense and defense that LeBron can teach her will make her a formidable challenge, at least to such smaller players as Mario Chalmers and Norris Cole.  Griner can play, it’s risky- but all she needs is a chance.

Josh Smith: A Mid-Career Retrospective

By Jordan Nedlin
July 6, 2013

Josh Smith is an enigma, touted by some as the poor man’s LeBron James yet shoots jumpers like a blindfolded Shaq.  Born in College Park, Georgia, he would go on to excel on his high school team and join fellow future NBA players Dwight Howard and Randolph Morris on the highly coveted AAU team, the Atlanta Celtics.  Following his junior year of high school, after realizing that he had true next level talent, Josh attended Oak Hill Academy in Virginia.  The private boarding school has been home to many perennial all stats including Carmelo Anthony and Kevin Durant.  Josh decided to declare for the NBA draft straight out of high school, forgoing his college years to begin collecting an NBA level salary, but also to begin competing alongside NBA competition.  The 6 ft 9 in, 225 lb combo forward was picked 17th by the Atlanta Hawks, and made All-Rookie second team honors, as well as taking home the slam dunk contest trophy during his inaugural season.  During his rookie season he posted a FG% of .455, making 274 out of 602 field goals, including 4 of 23 from 3pt range.  He also posted 6.2 rebounds and 1.7 assists, a career low and a stat that J-Smoove would continually raise throughout his now 9 year career.

Throughout the progression of his career, Smith continually raised the frequency of his three point shooting, with little to show for it.  From his rookie season (04-05) to his fifth season in the league (08-09) he posted a 3P% of .174, .309, .250, .253, and .299.  Smith, obviously not hyped as a shooter, showed extreme promise on the defensive end of the floor.  During his rookie year alone, and though he only played in 74 games, he posted an excellent 1.9 blocks per game.  Smith holds three shot blocking records, including being the youngest player to record 10 blocks in a game, at 19 years and 13 days.  He is also the youngest NBA player to ever record 500 blocks, doing so in 206 career games, at the age of 21 years, 88 days.  On February 2nd, 2010, at the age of 24 years, 59 days, with a total of 423 games played Smith became the youngest player to record 1000 blocks in a career.

During the 2009-2010 season something changed with Smith.  For whatever reason he stopped shooting 3 pointers.  He went from 87 three point shots the previous season to only 7, making none of them.  This seemed to breed positive results, as he posted a career high .505 FGA.  During this same season Smith also played the most games of any season played in the league, playing and starting in 81 of the 82 scheduled games.  He also posted a career high in rebounds, assists and steals, pulling the ball down off the rim 705 times, setting up teammates a total of 342 times, and robbing opponents of possessions 130 times, for an average of 8.7 rebounds, 4.2 assists, and 1.6 steals per game.

The lessons learned in the previous season did not carry over to the 2010-2011 season, as Smith posted a career high 154 three point shots, making 51 of them for .331 3P%.  He saw slightly decreased numbers in rebounding, over 1 assist less per game, a decline in steals and a considerable lack of blocks compared to the previous year.  In 2011-12 Smith shot even worse from 3pt range, posting an abysmal 28 of 109 for .257 3P%.  It was during this season that Smith was plagued by an MCL strain that caused him to miss a career high amount of games playing in only 66.  During the 2012-13 season, Smith continued his trend of increased 3pt shooting, going 61 of 201 from behind the arc, an unimpressive 30%.

This graphic from Kirk Goldsberry, a Harvard professor and analytics enthusiast, shows that Smith has never been a proficient shooter from behind the arc, but shows extreme talent when attacking the basket, something that he does at an above average clip, accounting for most of his points and certainly his most effective scoring.

During his free agency in the 2013 off season, Smith signed a 4 year, 56 million dollar contract with the Detroit Pistons, a team that is already loaded with low post scoring and interior defense with Greg Monroe and sophomore to be, Andre Drummond.  The signing is questionable because it will force Josh to revert back to his poor jump shooting ways instead of putting him in a setting that would place him in the middle of an offense with two or three 3 point shooters to spread the floor.  Smith would excel in the type of offense very similar to the one the Miami Heat run, centered around LeBron James.  Since there are always many long range shooters surrounding LeBron at all times, he is able to freely attack the basket and try to create contact and draw a foul or kick it out to a shooter for a wide open three after their defender collapsed to help the interior defender defend LeBron.

Smith was faced with this option when his longtime friend and former teammate Dwight Howard chose to sign with the Houston Rockets to play alongside a top 5 shooting guard in the league in James Harden, on a Rockets team that was responsible for making the most 3pt shots per game during the 2012-13 season.  It seems that Houston would have been the best fit for Smith in order to create a starting 5 of Howard, Smith, Parsons, Harden, and Jeremy Lin.  This starting lineup, in addition to Houston’s ability to get shots off its bench, combined with an insane amount of interior defense during the times that Smith would share the floor with Howard would seem to be the perfect way to jumpstart his career.  Instead Smith chose money over championships and received the contract he had been looking for, for many years.

Maybe Smith will never get it quite right.  He has been on the cusp of the all-star team his whole career, but just can’t seem to crack the lineup.  Maybe 2013-14 will be the year.  Possibly with a young core in Detroit, Smith will be revitalized and will pay more attention to attacking.  That, combined with the lack of big-man talent in the east, due to Kevin Garnett’s aging, Chris Bosh’s ineffectiveness, and Tyson Chandler’s shortcomings, Smith might be able to make some noise.  Of course we won’t know anything until we see what kind of additional moves Joe Dumars, Pistons GM, makes during this exciting offseason.  New Detroit coach Maurice Cheeks might be able to get Smith right after all.

Dwight's Decision

By Jordan Nedlin
July 5, 2013

Dwight's Decision. Who made out the best and who suffered the most consequence?

Late Friday July 5th, the landscape of the NBA's western conference changed for good when free agent Dwight Howard, most recently of the Los Angeles Lakers, decided that he would sign with the Houston Rockets, a move he made perhaps in order to "write [his] own story."  Houston and Los Angeles were certainly not the only teams that made the push to sign Howard, a defensive minded Center who many consider to be among the elite centers in today's game.  Among the other teams who met with Howard before he went into hiding in a secret lair somewhere far into the depths of Aspen, CO, were the Golden State Warriors, Dallas Mavericks, and Howards hometown Atlanta Hawks.  I, a man of zero credibility, will assess a number ranking (1-10) to help clear up how much Dwight's decision really shook up the foreseeable future for his suitors, among other teams.

Houston Rockets:10

After over a year of wooing, a process that started with an attempt to be the trade destination straight out of Orlando, the Houston Rockets finally got their guy.  GM Daryl Morey did a fantastic job making Houston a spot where Howard could see himself eventually winning championships.  Starting with the trade that landed them James Harden, a flashy 2 guard straight off a championship caliber OKC team, Morey continuously built his team that, with the addition of Howard, might be able to make its way to the end of the western bracket come June.

Golden State Warriors:7

Though they did not land Howard the Dubs made some great moves throughout the day in anticipation that he might be coming next.  The warriors were able to send Andres Biedrins, Rickard Jefferson and Brandon Rush to Utah to clear cap space.  In somewhat of a surprise move, they decided to sign Andre Iguodala, a veteran elite defender, to a 4 year $48 million deal, a move that Golden State should be revered for considering that though they have an elite shooting backcourt, they lacked perimeter defense, something Iguodala will have no problem inserting.

Atlanta Hawks:6

The Hawks were always the longshot in this situation, seeing as they only real way Howard would end up there was if Chris Paul also elected to leave his Clippers to also join the Hawks, a team that had enough cap space to hand out two max deals.  The Hawks were never really expected to land Howard, but they were able to sign some important pieces to great contracts (Paul Millsap: 2 years $19 million, DeMarre Carroll: 2 years $5 million) to make up for some of the talent that might be leaving town now that most of their roster is trying their luck in free agency.

Dallas Mavericks: 3

After winning the championship in 2011 behind a valiant effort by longtime Mav Dirk Nowitzki, owner Mark Cuban traded Tyson Chandler to the Knicks and since has fallen short on most of their free agent endeavors. The Shark Tank personality and otherwise multi-billionaire struck out on Deron Williams during the 2012 free agency, Williams instead electing to stay with the Nets, and though Cuban offered Howard the keys to the franchise, letting him know that he would be the future of the Mavericks and that the team would be built around him, it always seemed that Howard had no real interest in playing alongside an aging dirk and very limited supporting cast.

Los Angeles Lakers:1

The Lakers really struck out on this one, and they only have themselves to blame.  The big man spent only one year in tinsel town and apparently that was enough.  No, Howard wasn’t swayed by the opportunity to be another great center in the Lakers legendary line of great centers that include Wilt Chamberlain, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Shaq Diesel Cactus Aristotle O’Neal.  It also didn’t help that he had condescending Kobe offering his unmatched championship pedigree , supposedly promising Howard that he would “teach him how to win titles.”  The highest brass in Lakers organization Jim Buss, son of the late Dr. Jerry Buss, would reportedly not cooperate with Dwight’s requests to have the Zen master himself Phil Jackson come out of retirement to coach the squad again.  So as a man with any pride would do, he skipped town.

Orlando Magic:?

After a four team trade that seems like ancient history at this point, a trade headlined by sending Howard from Orlando to Los Angeles, Andrew Bynum, hair and all, to the Philadelphia 76ers, and Andre Iguodala from Philly to Denver, it is intersting to note that at least 2 of the three marquee talents are now on different teams, Howard with Houston and Iguodala with Golden State.  Andrew Bynum is currently a free agent, and though he says that he will not work out for any teams, it is unclear whether he will stay in Philadelphia.  In a strange kinda way, the Magic seem to have won this trade, adding young talent in Nikola Vucevic and eventually adding a young promising forward in Tobias Harris in a deal that send J.J. Reddick to the Bucks, though he is also now on a new team, signing with the new look Clippers.
